Foothill Gold Line

E-News Update - May 21, 2018

Message from Foothill Gold Line CEO Habib F. Balian

In late April, the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA) recommended approval of a nearly $300 million grant request from the State’s Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program to complete the Foothill Gold Line from Glendora to Montclair. I am happy to report that last week the staff recommendation was formally approved by the California Transportation Commission.

The Foothill Gold Line was one of several major projects submitted by LA Metro to be awarded grants; totaling nearly $1.8 billion in awards county-wide from SB1 and the Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program (TIRCP). The Foothill Gold Line was identified as Metro’s top priority for the TIRCP program; resulting in a full grant award to fill the estimated funding gap included in the Construction Authority’s financial plan. The Construction Authority will know the final cost for the project later this year, when bids are received; however, this award was critical to keeping the project on schedule, and we thank Metro staff and the board – including Chairman and LA Mayor Eric Garcetti, County Supervisors Hilda Solis and Kathryn Barger, Duarte Mayor John Fasana and Glendale Councilman Ara Najarian - for ensuring that the project remained a top priority for the agency.

The strong support by elected officials from all levels of government and key stakeholders from throughout the corridor helped make the difference in this grant award. In all, nearly 50 letters were submitted in support of the Foothill Gold Line request. In particular, we need to thank the corridor representatives at the state level that wrote letters and held meetings to support our request, including Senator Anthony Portantino and Assembly member Freddie Rodriguez; and Senators Connie Leyva, Dr. Ed Hernandez and Josh Newman and Assembly members Chris Holden, Blanca Rubio and Ed Chau. Thank you all for your continued support and dedication to the project’s completion.

The Journey Continues,

Habib F. Balian
